Snyder, Finlayson Lead Aggies To 2-0 Win Over Nevada

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior defender Katie Snyder drilled the game-winning shot from more than 20 yards out in the 87th minute to lift UC Davis to a 2-0 win over Nevada in a non-conference collegiate women's soccer game at Aggie Field Saturday.

The Aggies improve to 2-3 on the season. The Wolf Pack evens its record to 2-2-1 overall.

With the game clock approaching the three-minute mark, UC Davis freshman Danielle Contro sent a corner kick into the Nevada penalty box. Alison Green was unable to find a shooting opportunity and opted to clear the ball out to Snyder on the left perimeter. Snyder side-stepped one defender, then fired a slicing ball to the far post out of the reach of Megan Tarpenning.

"It's really exciting. It's my first goal, and it's what the team needed. I had missed an opportunity earlier in the season, and I was just hoping I'd get another one," said Snyder. "The ball just sliced off of my foot. Most defenders don't remember that I'm left-footed. It was one of the sweetest things I've ever seen. It went over, around and down."

Junior midfielder Heather Finlayson then added the coup de grace with 14 seconds remaining in the game. She accepted a well-placed cross from Dayna Dumont on the right flank, then turned and punched in the Aggies' second goal.

Green and Dumont each were credited with assists for their roles in the two goals.

Aggie sophomore Annie McAllister had an opportunity to break the scoreless tie shortly before Snyder's goal. Snyder served a ball to McAllister, who struck a hard shot to the upper right corner. Tarpenning made a lunging save, deflecting the ball out of bounds. That set up Contro's first corner kick, but UC Davis could not convert. Two minutes later, the Aggies were awarded another corner kick, which set the stage for Snyder's heroics.

Nevada had its best scoring chance in the 82nd minute as junior midfielder Terran Hadlock delivered a ball to Lauren Kinneman near the Aggie penalty box. Kinneman turned and fired a low line drive that missed wide of the left post by just a few feet.

Tarpenning finished the game with six saves against UC Davis' 11 total shots. Her counterpart, Aggie senior Krystyn Lizak, had three saves in the shutout win. Lizak's final save came in the 63rd minute as she stopped a strong free kick by freshman Jessica Thompson.

UC Davis returns to action with a road game at San Jose State on September 16.
