Aggies, Beavers Battle To 1-1 Tie In Season Opener

Sept. 1, 2005

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Dan Campbell scored a goal in the 36th minute for UC Davis, then Oregon State freshman Daniel Leach equalized it early in the second half as the Aggies and Beavers played to a 1-1, double-overtime tie in a non-conference men's soccer game at Aggie Field Thursday.

Each team opens the 2005 season with an 0-0-1 record.

Although UC Davis midfielder Ahmad Hatifie fired the first shot of the game, OSU controlled the offensive action for the early going, managing four attempts and four corner-kick opportunities in the first 22 minutes of play. However, the Aggies took the reins at the 35:46 mark when sophomore Paul Cain sent a long serve from beyond the center line to an open Campbell. Campbell turned and planted his shot into the Beaver net to give UC Davis an early 1-0 lead.

In the 54th minute, Oregon State midfielder Ryan Callahan lofted a corner kick to teammate Alex Christensen, who in turn fired a shot at the Aggie cage. UC Davis goalkeeper Charles Warne knocked down the attempt but Leach was there to corral the rebound and finish the scoring opportunity. The 1-1 deadlock held up through regulation and two 10-minute overtimes.

UC Davis sophomore midfielder Nicholas Lind was the first player to threaten in the overtime. Just 90 seconds into the third period, he advanced to the OSU net but the Beaver defense was there to collapse on him and foil the offensive effort.

The Beavers also had a chance to win the game early in the first extra frame when forward Robbie Findley made a strong move to the UC Davis net. Russ Brown was there to steal the ball and clear it out. OSU retained position and threatened again. Less than a minute later, Ryan Johnson's header missed wide and was deflected for an OSU corner kick. Teammate Matt Johnson sent his corner kick into the fray, but Warne leapt among the crowd to nab the ball in front of the near post.

Aggie freshman Quincy Amarikwa and Beaver sophomore Brett Gardner had shot attempts in the second overtime, but neither could convert. OSU had the last substantial chance to break the tie as Ryan Johnson sent a cross to junior forward Bryan Jordan. But again, Warne was there to cut off the pass and end the threat.

Warne finished the game with five saves for UC Davis while his counterpart Packy Deenihan posted six saves in net for Oregon State. The Beavers outshot their hosts by an 18-13 margin and enjoyed an 8-0 edge on corner kicks.

Local sports fans were also treated to the attendance of Sacramento Kings guard Mike Bibby, who is the cousin of OSU's Findley.

UC Davis returns to action on Sunday for a home date with Stanford.
