Aug. 26, 2005

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior defender Mandi Siller scored on a rebound of a Linda Sanchez shot in the 36th minute to lead Sacramento State to a 1-0 victory over UC Davis in a non-conference women's soccer game at Aggie Field in front of 271 Friday afternoon.

The Aggies open their season at 0-1-0. The Hornets launch their 2005 campaign with a 1-0-0 mark.

The Hornets broke the scoreless tie in the 36th minute when sophomore striker Katie McCoy sent a corner kick into the Aggie penalty box. When UC Davis was unable to control the kick, Sanchez launched it off the crossbar, then Mandi Siller corralled the rebound and punched the ball into the net for the game's only scoring play.

UC Davis had an opportunity to tie the score less than a minute later as Christen Rauschnot's free kick sailed out of reach of Sac State keeper Jennifer Lawrence. The shot caromed off the crossbar, then Katie Snyder picked up the rebound from 20 yards out and resent it toward the Hornet net. Her shot sailed wide and Sac State retained possession.

The Aggies made only one substantial scoring threat in the second half as Katie Snyder sent a corner kick to midfielder Sita Kuteira at the top of the penalty box. However, Lawrence knocked down Kuteira's header attempt and the Hornets protected their lead.

UC Davis outshot Sacramento State by a 24-3 margin, including 11-1 before the halftime break. Lawrence finished the game with 11 saves.

The Aggies return to action with a home game against Portland State Sunday.
