DAVIS, Calif. - Cory Lekkerkerker, a 6-foot-7, 324-pound offensive tackle for UC Davis the past two seasons, is one of 19 rookie free agents to agree to contract terms with the San Diego Chargers, the NFL club announced on Tuesday. Terms of the agreement were not announced.
Lekkerkerker was not selected during this past weekend's NFL Draft, making him eligible for signing by any team. He started all 20 games during his Aggie career, the first 10 during the 2003 season when he played on the opposite side of the offensive line from his older brother, Brad, who spent this past season on the Oakland Raiders' practice squad.
Cory Lekkerkerker was an All-Great West Football Conference first team selection this past season, helping UC Davis average 402.2 ypg in total offense and 32.3 ppg in scoring. The Aggies finished 6-4 overall this past season, securing their 35th consecutive winning season.
As a junior in 2003, Lekkerkerker was named winner of the team's Jim Ferrier Award as the outstanding tranfer, helping UC Davis post a 6-4 record. Cory and Brad Lekkerkerker transferred to UC Davis from Chaffey College in Southern California with Cory earning All-Foothill Conference second team honors in 2001. He redshirted for the Aggies during the 2002 season.
The Lekkerkerker brothers were spotlighted during the 2003 season when Sports Illustrated ran a short feature on them.
