DAVIS, Calif. - In its final game of the season, UC Davis was defeated by Cal Poly, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in men's soccer action at Aggie Field in Davis, Calif. The Mustangs scored the game's only goal in the 11th minute and held on despite a consistent Aggie attack for the remainder of the contest.
Cal Poly took the lead at the 10:34 mark of the first half when Eric Ward scored on an assist by Marcus Griffin. The goal was part of a strong start, offensively, for Cal Poly, which held a 5-1 advantage in shots midway through the first half.
For the game, though, the Aggies outshot the Mustangs, 18-7. Quincy Amarikwa led the Aggies with four shots. Greg Hammond finished with three while Dylan Curtis, Paul Cain, Steven Ernst and Dan Campbell each had two.
In a physical game, Cal Poly committed 27 fouls compared to 12 for UC Davis. There were a total of eight cards. Cal Poly was issued four yellows and one red while UC Davis had three yellows.
"Unfortunately, we have the tendency to give up early goals, and we did it again today," said UC Davis head coach Dwayne Shaffer. "We had enough chances. I thought we put enough pressure on them to get a goal, but it just wasn't meant to be."
The game also marked the end of the collegiate career for Ernst, who was honored prior to what was his final game in an Aggie uniform.
