SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore Henri Landes beat San Francisco's Will O'Shea in straight sets to move into the semifinals, then advanced past teammate Daniel Elefant to claim a berth in the final of the White singles draw, highlighting UC Davis action at the Bronco Invitational men's collegiate tennis tournament at Santa Clara's Dehgeri Tennis Center Saturday.
Also reaching a bracket final is the Aggie doubles tandem of Daniel Elefant and Casey McMakin, who clipped Saint Mary's team of Alp Ozpinar and Tim Welty, 8-3, in the consolation semifinal of the Red doubles draw. Elefant and McMakin earlier defeated Rafal Stupka and Thomas Dawson of Nevada by an 8-3 score in the consolation quarters.
Aggie sophomore Justin Garcia also gained a Sunday match, beating Will McAllister in a 6-3, 6-3 semifinal in the White consolation bracket.
Landes beat O'Shea by a 6-1, 6-2 score and Elefant defeated UC San Diego's Blake Meister, 6-3, 6-3, in the respective quarterfinal matches. Landes and Elefant then drew each other in the semis, although no score was available for Landes' advancement.
In other UC Davis action, Michael Chin took a 7-6, 6-1 win over Portland's Luis Gonzalez in Gold consolation round-robin play.
Three Aggies had the misfortunate of drawing seeded players in Saturday's play. McMakin lost in straight sets to top-seeded Santa Clara in the White singles quarterfinal. Landes and Jordan Combs faced second-seeded Scott Hohenstein and Grant Robertson of UC Santa Barbara, dropping a tough 8-6 decision.
The Bronco Invitational consists of three tiers of singles, designated as Blue, Red and White; and two flights of doubles, labeld Blue and Red. Additionally, a Gold round-robin was added to provide additional play to those eliminated from the Blue and Red brackets.
Landes faces No. 1 seed Tommy Hicks of Santa Clara in Sunday's White final. Garcia squares off with No. 2 seed Jeff Zellar in the White consolation final. In doubles action, Elefant and McMakin will await the winner of the consolation semifinal between Stanford and UC San Diego.
