SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Michael Chin picked up a victory in the Red singles and doubles bracket to highlight UC Davis play in the first day at the Bronco Invitational men's collegiate tennis tournament at Santa Clara's Dehgeri Tennis Center Friday.
Chin swept Nevada's Eldar Dzhafarov in his opening singles match, winning in a first-set tiebreaker then taking a 6-3 second set. Chin then lost to Chris Rasmussen of Stanford by a 6-3, 7-6 final.
Chin also teamed up with Justin Garcia is the Aggies' lone entry in the Blue doubles draw. They beat Andre Sion and Julien Tizot of Saint Mary's in a 8-6 decision, then lost to Rasmussen and Jon Wong of Stanford by an 8-1 final in the quarterfinals.
In other singles action, Henri Landes beat UC San Diego's Stephen Oechel in straight sets then knocked off Stanford's Jeff Zellar in a 6-4, 6-4 sweep in the White second-round match. Landes is the only UC Davis player who went 2-0 in Friday's singles play. Also in the White bracket, Casey McMakin beat Carlos Machado of Portland by a 6-1, 6-2 score; while Daniel Elefant went three sets to beat Portland's Tim Chang.
The doubles teams of Combs/Landes and Elefant/McMakin both lost tough doubles matches in their respective rounds. Combs and Landes fell to Luis Gonzalez and Scott Kennel of Portland in a 9-8 battle while Elefant and McMakin also fell to Tim Chang and Carlos Machado of Portland in a tiebreaker.
The Bronco Invitational continues through Sunday.
