DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Juan Hernandez deposited his penalty kick into the lower right corner of the net with 55 seconds remaining in the first overtime, lifting UC Davis to a 1-0 victory over UC Riverside in a non-conference men's collegiate soccer match at Aggie Field in front of 424 spectators Saturday.
The Aggies move to 5-4-2 on the year, including a 5-0-1 record at home. The Highlanders, who beat UC Davis in double overtime just two weeks before, drop to 2-8-1 overall.
Hernandez won his golden-goal opportunity when UC Davis freshman Quincy Amarikwa and UC Riverside goalkeeper Jordan King collided high in the box. King was charged with a foul and yellow card on the play, and Hernandez assumed the honors of the penalty kick. It is the first penalty kick taken by the Aggies this season.
UC Davis outshot its guests by a 18-5 margin, including 10-2 in the first half. Paul Cain had several opportunities to assist on an Aggie first goal during the early going, sending long throw-ins into the mixture on three straight occasions from the fifth through 11th minutes. Greg Hammond, Amarikwa and Ian Conklin each put headers on Cain's throws but each was off the mark.
King quelled some of UC Davis' offensive pressure in the second half, intercepting long serves into the box in the 67th and 86th minutes. Each pass was headed directly to a well-positioned Aggie attacker, who was unable to fire a shot at the Riverside cage. King also had a key save against Amarikwa in the 69th minute, stopping a low line drive from about six yards out along the left side of the box.
The Highlanders held UC Davis to three shots in the second period, and managed to fire three of their own. With 31 seconds remaining in regulation, UCR sophomore Andrew Villalobos sent a blast from 25-yard at the Aggie cage, but UC Davis keeper Derek Shaffer stopped the shot and helped force the overtime.
The Aggies continued to apply pressure in the overtime, taking four more stabs at the Riverside net before Amarikwa drew the key foul. Hammond had an outside shot blocked by the UCR back line, Ahmad Hatifie narrowly missed on a sliding shot in the 97th minute, then King made a diving save on another Hatifie attempt.
It was during the ensuing possession after King's save that Amarikwa advanced in his attacking third and drew the penalty. King's yellow card was the sixth by Riverside for the day and one of eight by both teams.
Derek Shaffer earned his fourth shutout in as many starts, dropping his goals-against average to 0.55. He had two saves for the match.
UC Davis returns to road, first against Cal Poly on October 14 then against 2004 national runner-up UC Santa Barbara.
