SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Aggies Michael Chin and Justin Garcia lost a hard-fought 9-7 pro set against third-seeded Klaus Jank and Andy Kuharsky of Washington in the doubles round of 16 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional men's tournament at Santa Clara Sunday.
Chin and Garcia represented the last remaining UC Davis players in a championship draw. They had reached the round of 16 by virtue of their 8-3 win over Stanford's tandem of Jon Wong and Jeff Zeller on Saturday.
Five Aggies competed in round-robin consolation singles play on Sunday, with three picking up victories. Daniel Elefant topped Ahad Ebrahim in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-1. Garcia beat Robert Price, also of Pacific, in a 7-5, 6-4 match. Henri Landes topped Yasuo Sakurai of Hawai'i, coming back from a 7-6 loss in the first set to post a 6-2 win in the second. Landes then won the one-game tiebreaker by a 10-6 final.
Casey McMakin almost garnered a fourth Aggie victory in his round-robin match with Mike Ricks of Washington. McMakin won the first set 6-3 and led 5-4 in the second before the Husky junior held off an upset by taking three straight games to even the match at 1-1, then posting a 10-2 win in the tiebreaker.
The UC Davis men will conclude the fall portion of the schedule in November with matches at Hawai'i and Hawaii-Hilo.
