SANTA CLARA, Calif. - UC Davis junior Michael Chin and sophomore Justin Garcia beat Stanford's doubles team of Jon Wong and Jeff Zeller to advance to the round of 16 during the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional men's tournament at Santa Clara Saturday. The Aggie duo, which had a Friday bye, beat the Cardinal tandem by an 8-3 final.
Jayce Fitch and Bastian Bartels lost their second-round doubles match, taking Oregon's No. 3-seeded Marcus Schiller and Aaron Spencer to an extra game in a 9-7 pro set loss.
In the singles draw, three Aggies continued on to Sunday play by winning consolation second-round matches. Casey McMakin beat Brent Hunter of Hawaii in split sets, then swept Torin Chang of USF, 6-3, 6-0, in his advancing round. Bartels also won a tiebreaker against Nevada's Rafal Stupka in the first round, then overcame a 6-0 loss in the first set against Yury Platonov of Saint Mary's. Bartels took the second set by a 6-2 final, then won the one-game, first-to-10 tiebreaker by a 13-11 final.
Henri Landes, who won by walkover against USF's Falko Huttenberger in the first round, disposed of Nevada's Randy Reynolds in a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set win in the second round.
Michael Chin and Daniel Elefant, who advanced into the second round of the singles draw on Friday, each engaged in consolation round-robin play on Saturday. Chin lost to John Pettit of Cal by a 7-5, 6-3 final, while Elefant took Oregon's Eric Pickard to a tiebreaking set. Elefant won the first set, 6-4, then lost the second by an identical score. Pickard outlasted the Aggie sophomore, 10-8, in the one-game tiebreaker.
The ITA Northwest Regional continues through Tuesday.
