SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Michael Chin and sophomore Daniel Elefant each won respective first-round singles matches to lead UC Davis in the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional collegiate men's tournament at Santa Clara Friday.
Chin easily beat Saint Mary's Thomas Dawson by a 6-1, 6-0 final, while Elefant took slightly longer to beat Cal Poly's Aaron Elbert, finishing off his opponent in a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Both Aggie players fell in their second-round matches. Elefant was dispatched, 6-1, 6-3, by Kevin McQuaid of Santa Clara. Michael Chin lasted three sets with ninth-seeded Gabriel Loredo of Sacramento State. Loredo took a 6-3 win in the first set, then Chin posted a 6-3 victory in the second. The Hornet junior, a native of Mexico City, held on to take a 7-5 in the decisive third set.
In doubles action, juniors Bastian Bartels and Jayce Fitch picked up UC Davis' lone victory, beating Dawson and Alp Ozpinar of Saint Mary's in an 8-2 pro set.
The ITA Northwest Regional continues through Tuesday, October 25.
