DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore forward Annie McAllister posted a goal and an assist to lead UC Davis to a wild 4-3 win over Cal State Northridge in a gusty non-conference women's collegiate soccer match at Aggie Field Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies, ending a three-game homestand, improve to 4-7-3 for the year. The Matadors drop their fourth straight contest, falling to 10-5-0 overall.
A strong north wind played a role in the game, backing UC Davis in the first half and Cal State Northridge in the second. According to local reports of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, the wind ranged from 20-30 mph with gusts as strong as 45 mph.
The Aggies drew first blood just six minutes, 22 seconds in the first period when McAllister beat her defender then sent a pass to Megan Wall inside the Matador penalty box. Wall put a soft touch on the ball and directed it into the net for her fourth goal of the season.
In the 27th minute, Northridge tied the game despite the disadvantage of the headwinds. Tryna Tafoya sent a corner kick from the right flag into the mixture inside the penalty box. Freshman attacker Kristal Phillips fired the first shot but it was blocked by the clump of Aggie defenders. As both teams scrambled to gain possession of the loose ball, junior Sara Davis won the battle and headed a second ball into the net for the equalizer.
Matador midfielder Kristy Krohn had an opportunity to put her team ahead in the 30th minute as she got through the Aggie defense for a 1-v-1 situation, but her shot missed wide right.
Instead, UC Davis reclaimed the lead in the 36th minute. Freshman defender Julia Gamlen centered a cross to forward Dayna Dumont in the penalty box. Dumont put a head on the pass shortly before colliding with a CSUN defender, never seeing the ball roll past the left post for the go-ahead goal.
Aggie goalkeeer Krystyn Lizak helped protect UC Davis' lead before halftime by stopping a shot from Phillips in the 45th minute. After drawing a foul in the midfield, Sara Davis sent her free kick into the penalty box and Phillips put a header on it, but Lizak was there for the save.
Playing into the wind for the second half, UC Davis managed to stretch their advantage at the 58:36 mark. The senior front-line crew of Kristin Aja and Lindsey Raymond put two quick touches on the ball to advance it to McAllister just outside the penalty box. McAllister turned and sent a line drive inside the right post to put her team up by a 3-1 lead.
Northridge threatened less than seven minutes later on back-to-back shots by Vanessa Crowell and Devon Nizich. Aja blocked Crowell's 10-yarder and Lizak stopped Nizich's blast. Then in the 66th minute, Krohn drew a foul in the penalty box while attempting to advance on the UC Davis cage. Teammate Brianna Monka took the penalty-kick chores and delivered her shot in to the lower left corner, cutting the Aggie lead to 3-2.
In the 78th minute, UC Davis scored its fourth goal in perhaps the most unlikely fashion given the conditions. Katie Snyder served a hard, arching free kick from almost 40 yards deep along the left flank of the midfield. Matador keeper Karen Comstock came up to collect the ball but seemed to misjudge the combination of the ball's spin and movement from the wind. The long serve deflected off Comstock and ricocheted into the net, putting UC Davis up by two again.
Northridge used the conditions to its advantage to cut the lead down one more time in the 89th minute. Crowell lifted a long serve to teammate Casey Dodd near the left post, and Dodd scored on a header with 1:29 on the clock. Neither team managed a shot after that as the Aggies played to protect in the final minute.
Lizak finished the game with three saves in the UC Davis net. April Cline started the first half and tallied one save, then Comstock matched that total in her second-half stint.
UC Davis returns to the road for matches at Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton on October 21 and 23, respectively.
