DAVIS, Calif. - Senior defender Lauren Baer scored off an assist by freshman Megan Ortiz in the 64th minute to account for the lone goal in UC Irvine's 1-0 win over UC Davis in a non-conference women's collegiate soccer match at Aggie Field Friday afternoon.

The Aggies drop to 3-7-3 for the season. The Anteaters improve to 4-10-1.

Shortly after receiving the second of her team's three yellow cards in the contest, Baer switched from the defensive unit to the attacking line. Ortiz broke through the UC Davis midfield and rolled a quick pass to Baer, who beat Aggie goalkeeper Krystyn Lizak and virtually walked the ball into the net.

Irvine had the first opportunity to score when Lizak made a diving stop of Ortiz' header in the third minute of the game. After that early threat, UC Davis employed the strong tailwind to keep the ball in its attacking third. The Aggies fired 11 of its 17 total shots before the halftime break, including three attempts by senior Lindsey Raymond during the 11th and 12th minutes.

Erin Henry had six saves for UCI in the first half, and Anteater freshman Kathleen Lemieux also helped protect the shutout by deflecting a hard line shot from Aggie forward Megan Wall in the 23rd minute. Henry caught a break in the 32nd minute when UC Davis freshman Dayna Dumont's shot slipped through her hands. However, the loose ball rolled to a stop in the penalty box and Henry was able to take control before any Aggie could approach.

Dumont had another chance late in the first half when she broke through the Anteater defense on a counter-attack. Her blast from 10 yards went straight into the hands of Henry.

UC Irvine took their first attempt at the Aggie cage in the 52nd minute as Lemieux served a free kick Mackenzie Beahm near the right post. Beahm put a head on the pass but missed wide. The Anteaters also earned a corner-kick opportunity in the 61st minute, but could not convert. Finally, at 63:33 into the game, Baer hit her game-winner.

The Aggies managed a few shots during the next 15 minutes of play, including a 25-yard bomb from defender Katie Snyder. Reserve goalkeeper Rosie Aguilera, who took over net duties in the second half, got her hands on Snyder's blast for her only save.

UCI midfielder Britney Webster nearly stretched out the Anteater lead in the 82nd when she fired a free kick at the Aggie cage from nearly 40 yards deep. Lizak leapt and punched the ball over the crossbar for her fourth and final save.

UC Davis completes its three-game homestand against Cal State Northridge on Sunday.
