DAVIS, Calif. - Off to a 4-0 start and coming off a 30-20 win at Northern Colorado on Saturday, the UC Davis football team has made a name for itself on the national scene by being ranked No.24 in The Sports Network Division I-AA Top 25 poll, released Monday morning.
Additionally, UC Davis landed itself in the ESPN/USA Today I-AA Top 25 coaches poll, earning 105 points for a No.25 ranking. The Sports Network Poll is voted by the media and sports information directors.
The Aggies, also 2-0 in the Great West Football Conference, garnered 286 points in The Sports Network poll, four points better than No.25 Hampton (4-1) which dropped from its No.17 position following its first loss of the year. It is UC Davis' first appearance in a national poll since beginning its reclassification from NCAA Div. II to I-AA at the start of the 2003 season.
The Aggies are one of two Great West Football Conference teams in the polls, joining Cal Poly (4-0) who is ranked 10th in both. UC Davis visits Cal Poly on Oct. 30. The Aggies, though, will face another ranked team before that when they host No.5/No.5 Stephen F. Austin (4-0) for the annual Homecoming game at Toomey Field on Oct. 16.
Besides Stephen F. Austin, Cal Poly and UC Davis, the only other undefeated team in the polls is Jacksonville State (4-0).
UC Davis visits Western Oregon (1-3) on Saturday for a 2 p.m. nonconference game before returning home to face Stephen F. Austin. Saturday's victory was also historic for the Aggies as it gave head coach Bob Biggs his 100th career win.
