DAVIS, Calif. --- Vanessa Sallee posted a 4:30.27 in the 400-yard individual medley, trimming her season-best time by six seconds and surpassing NCAA 'A' qualifying standards as UC Davis beat UC Santa Cruz, 195.5 to 95.5 in a collegiate swimming dual meet at Hickey Pool Saturday. Sallee also made her 2003 debut in the 200 back, hitting NCAA 'B' standards with a 2:06.15 time.

In the men's half of the meet, Patrick Jacobson and Kevin Williams each won two events to lead the Aggies to a 186-101 win over the Banana Slugs. Jacobson won the 50 free at 21.35 and the 100 fly at 54.11, while Williams picked up his wins in the 500 free (4:44.77) and 100 free (46.47). Diver Logan Champion also won a pair of events, recording first-place scores of 227.10 and 228.55 on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, respectively.

"The important thing about scheduling this meet is to give us data," said UC Davis head coach Pete Motekaitis. "We can fine-tune the last few days of our taper, adjust work-and-rest ratios. It comes down to the volume and quality of our work. I really respect the effort that the team has given me."

The Aggies posted wins throughout the meet as Matt Davie won the 200 freestyle in 1:42.17, Rob Lea captured the 100 back at 55.21, Brian Busse won the 200 fly in 1:58.48, Mike Fahy placed first in the 200 back at 1:56.88.

Other highlights on the women's side included Yuka Kobayashi breaking her own school mark with a 57.52 in the 100 backstroke. She also swam her first-ever 200 breast, touching in 2:31.00. Elizabeth Glick improved on her 1,000 freestyle time with a 10:38.49 and bettered her season-best time in the 100 backstroke to 2:06.15.

"It gives us a boost of confidence, but it might give us some doubts. They might think, 'am I too early?'," said UC Davis women's head coach Barbara Jahn. "I'd say three fourths of our swims were satisfactory. Some people just shined today ? Vanessa in the 400 IM, Yuka's school record, Glick's lifetime best in the 1,000."

UC Davis kicked off the meet in exciting fashion when the 200 medley relay foursome of Elizabeth Glick, Zahra Shahalayi, Yuka Kobayashi and Jessica Pietrzyk hit national standards with a winning time of 1:47.92. This added Pietrzyk to the roster of competitors for this year's NCAA D-II meet in North Dakota. The diving squad added another national qualifier in Cyndie Thompson, who surpassed NCAA 'A' standards on low board with a second-place score of 250.800.

Saturday's dual meet is the last for both Aggie squads before the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships on February 19-22.
