DAVIS, Calif. - With twice-daily practices behind it, the UC Davis football team - ranked as high as No.2 in preseason polls - will host the annual Blue-Gold scrimmage game on Friday night at Toomey Field.
The scrimmage will begin at 7 p.m. and admission is free. The controlled scrimmage will feature the Gold team (offense) against the Blue (defense) the entire way.
UC Davis will then turn its full attention to the 2002 season-opener at top-ranked Grand Valley State, with kickoff to the 84th season of Aggie football set for 4 p.m. (PDT) on Sept. 7 in Allendale, Mich.
The matchup against the Lakers will mean UC Davis will have faced the two NCAA finalists in two consecutive games. North Dakota beat the Aggies, 14-2, in last year's national semifinals, a week before the Fighting Sioux edged Grand Valley State for the NCAA Division II championship.
UC Davis finished the 2001 season with a 10-3 record and its fourth trip to the national semifinals in six years. The Aggies are also looking to extend their NCAA-record for consecutive winning seasons to 33, while tying West Chester (Pa.) for most consecutive non-losing seasons.
All games throughout the season can be heard on KHTK (1140 AM) and on KDVS (90.3 FM).
