SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - UC Davis freshman Yuka Kobayashi tied a 14-year-old school record and posted two automatic qualifying marks for the 2003 NCAA Division II Championships to lead the women, while the Aggie men won seven races in their dual, as both Aggie swimming squads posted season-opening wins at San Francisco State.
UC Davis posted a 125-72 win on the women's side, while nearly matching that score with a 117-72 victory by the men. Senior All-American Matt Davie had two wins - one of them as a non-scorer - to help lead the Aggie men.
Kobayashi, a freshman who went to high school both in California and Japan before coming to UC Davis, was impressive in her first swims with the Aggies. She won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 56.42 seconds, which not only was an automatic qualifying mark for this season's nationals by nearly two seconds, but tied Kristi Wheeler's UC Davis record set at the 1988 nationals.
Kobayashi wasn't done yet, later winning the 100 backstroke in 58.65, five seconds faster than her closest competition. The time - like her mark in the fly - was a pool record and an "A" mark for nationals. It is also second on the Aggies' all-time list, trailing only teammate Elizabeth Glick's 58.12. Kobayashi also swam on the Aggies' winning 200 medley relay (1:54.97).
UC Davis captured eight races on Saturday, also getting a qualifying mark in the 1,000 free from Rachelle Compton. She won the race in 10:47.47, breaking another pool record.
Sara Morrell was a double-winner for UC Davis, capturing the 50 free (26.16) and 100 free (56.72). Jessica Pietrzyk (50 free, 26.16) and Vanessa Sallee (200 IM, 2:13.66) also won events for UC Davis.
Davie began his day for the Aggie men, winning the 1,000 freestyle by nearly 10 seconds with a time of 9:58.11. His mark was just .06 off the NCAA qualifying standard. Davie, swimming as a non-scoring competitor in the 500 freestyle later in the meet, posted a time of 4:45.83.
The Aggies won eight events Saturday, including the first five contested. UC Davis did not score in the final two races, racing all its competitors as exhibitions.
Jeff McGee had a "B" mark in the 100 backstroke, besting the mark with a time of 53.63, which was also the seventh-fastest time in the Gators' pool. Other winners for UC Davis included, Kevin Williams in the 200 freestyle (1:48.37), Travis Low in the 50 freestyle (22.81), Kyle Wooldridge in the 200 individual medley (2:02.19) and Ben Vanderplas in the 100 freestyle (50.12).
UC Davis also won the 200 medley relay in 1:40.97, taking three of the top four spots in the race.
The Aggies return to action next Saturday at the UC Santa Cruz Relays.
