Jessica Young, a former women's golf student-athlete at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, is UC Davis' new assistant coach, as announced by head coach Anna Temple on September 1, 2018.
Â
"I'm really grateful for the opportunity to join the Aggie family. Coach Temple and the team have great energy as well as a lot of talent and drive. I'm very excited to be a part of this program and hit the ground running," said Young.
Â
"I am extraordinarily excited about welcoming Jessica to our Aggie family. Â As a young coach who brings a lot of passion and energy to our program, she is hungry to learn and her work ethic is already impressive," said Temple.
Â
"UC Davis is a great place for her to develop as a coach, I'm excited for all that she will add to this program," Temple added.
Â
Young, a mainstay in UTRGV's lineup throughout her three years with the program, attended Oregon State as a freshman before completing her undergraduate career in Edinburg, Texas. In addition to graduating with a bachelor's degree in multidisciplinary studies (psychology, English, special education) in 2017, she competed for the Vaqueros and earned a graduate degree in special education the following year.
Â
During the second round of the Bradley Spring Break Invitational in March, 2018, Young carded a 72 — the fifth-lowest individual round in program history and lowest score recorded by any UTRGV golfer in that event.
Â
That result was two shots shy of matching a career-low figure, which took place during her junior season when the Vaqueros visited Phoenix the previous March, and competed in the Grand Canyon Invite. Not only did Young post a career-low round that week, she earned UTRGV's highest individual finish: ninth place with a 222.
Â
Young etched her name in the program's record book with that three-round result, which now stands as the fourth-lowest individual performance in program history.
Â
The four-time AD Honor Roll recipient at UTRGV capped an outstanding career last spring by earning All-WAC Academic Team distinction.
Â
Before she arrived at Oregon State in 2014 — she did not compete in athletics as a freshman — Young earned 12 varsity letters at Gold Beach High School as a member of the golf, basketball and volleyball teams. Led by her eighth-place finish at the state championships, thanks to her two-round score of 158, Young competed in this postseason tournament in each of her four years at GBHS.
