Alec Sundly

A former Cal midfielder and a former professional player both in the U.S. and Europe, Alec Sundly joined the UC Davis men's soccer staff as an assistant coach in August 2021 and returns for his second season in 2022.

He got his coaching start as a volunteer assistant for his alma mater in 2020-21.

With Sundly on staff in 2021, the Aggies went 9-10-1 after returning from a one-year competition pause due to the cancelation of the 2020 season by the Big West Conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven Aggies earned All-Big West Conference honors for the 2021 season and UC Davis advanced to the Big West Conference Tournament semifinal for the fourth straight season.

Sundly, who played for the Golden Bears from 2010-13, earned All-Pac-12 Conference second-team honors and Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention during his collegiate career. He scored 14 career goals, starting 55 of 73 total games played.

Sundly's professional career began with a second-round selection (31st overall) by the New England Revolution in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He later played for the Rochester Rhinos (2014) and Real Monarchs (2015-16) of the USL, then went overseas for stints with Hörvikens IF (Sweden), Nosaby IF (Sweden) and FCA Darmstadt (Germany). Sundly then returned to his Orange County home to play for the Cal United Strikers of the National Independent Soccer Association.

Sundly completed his undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2013.
