Sammantha Brockel MS, ATC
UC Davis
Assistant Athletic Trainer
Men's Basketball, Men's Golf

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2015-2017; 2018-present

As a Fellow at UC Davis, I was provided a great working environment that allowed me to have a well-rounded mentorship experience. I was privileged to work with many different experienced and knowledgeable ATs, with varying backgrounds, who allowed me the opportunity to explore and develop my own clinical and rehabilitative philosophy. The fellowship program provided monthly development meetings which introduced new clinical concepts and rehabilitative techniques. These meetings allowed us to gain knowledge and seek out further CEU opportunities; from Graston, Myofascial Decompression and BFR to preventative screenings like FMS and SFMA. I was given the opportunity to work with the field hockey and softball teams in addition to working alongside our head AT with the men's basketball team. I gained experience that would not only help me develop into a more well-rounded AT, but also provided me with great connections and a network of colleagues for the rest of my career.

The UC Davis Athletic Training Fellowship Program was an amazing experience in my athletic training career. The staff are supportive and always working towards a better practice and providing the student-athletes with the utmost care. Having the opportunity to serve as an athletic training fellow with the men's water polo and gymnastics teams taught me to become a more adaptive and holistic athletic trainer. I am forever grateful for the experience I gained while working with UC Davis Sports Medicine.

I loved my year at UC Davis as the Certified Athletic Trainer Fellow! It was the perfect experience to follow up my Entry Level Master's Degree Program in Athletic Training. I learned so much from the certified staff and team doctors - they were incredible mentors for me during my first year as a professional. The most valuable part of my internship were the relationships I formed with student-athletes. I really got to know the track and field and women's lacrosse athletes, and they were some of the smartest and hardest working athletes I have ever met. They were all such wonderful people, and I still miss them! I am grateful to UC Davis for teaching me a professional standard of athletic training that has helped me to provide high quality care to my current athletes. Go Ags!

Athletic Trainer

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2017-19

This fellowship helped me to grow as a clinician by providing a great learning environment. Everyone I met and worked with from the athletic trainers, to coaches and administration are great people and make UC Davis an awesome place to work. The athletic trainers were invested in my growth and gave me the autonomy I needed to grow as a clinician, but also gave me guidance and mentorship when I needed it. This fellowship gave me great experience and helped prepare me for the next step in my career.

One of the best things while working at Davis was building relationships with everyone, especially with my co-workers and teams. My favorite memories are all the road trips I spent with the lacrosse team, even the week-long East Coast trips.

Ben Kmetz

Assistant Athletic Trainer
Baseball

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2016-2017

At UC Davis, I was able to gain experience providing medical care in all aspects to the student-athletes. I was able to work and learn from the sports medicine team and apply my knowledge when I worked with baseball. The staff was always willing to answer questions and collaborate with me. I believe this opportunity provided me with a foundation of knowledge needed to obtain a full-time assistant athletic training position.

Janice Lee, MAT, ATC
UCLA
Assistant Athletic Trainer
Track & Field

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2017-19

I experienced the biggest growth, and became more comfortable getting out of my comfort zone throughout this opportunity. This fellowship was my first work experience as a certified AT right out of school, and there were many challenging moments throughout my two years here: dealing with both the physical and mental health of athletes, having to quickly adapt to unexpected situations, etc. However, it was a great learning process and I am grateful to work alongside a very supportive staff to guide me as a young professional.

Traveling with the track & field and cross country teams were my favorite memories while working at UC Davis. It was fun going to places I've never been to, watching my athletes compete alongside the very best in the sport, and experiencing the aspect of traveling within the profession. It was also pretty cool to meet other athletic trainers from all over the country; track meets are a hub where many schools come together, so I made a lot of connections.

Nicole Lopez

Nicole Lopez, MAT, ATC

Assistant Athletic Trainer
Men's Soccer/Men's Tennis

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2011-2012

I had the privilege of being one of the first fellows (intern was my title back then) at UC Davis. It also happened to be my first job after finishing grad school. I covered cross country/track and field. I look back at my time at UC Davis and do not regret my decision to apply. I worked with some of the best student athletic trainers, some of whom are my colleagues. I was able to work with some amazing co-workers/clinicians who taught me so much. Those same people, I still am able to call my friends. It was a wonderful experience! Thank you UC Davis for being a part of my journey!!

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2015-2016

The UC Davis Athletic Training Fellowship added a lot to my career as an AT and to me as a person. My experience working with men's water polo and women's lacrosse gave me many opportunities to learn and improve. I loved it! After my UCD fellowship program, I came back to Japan and began my career in a neurosurgical rehab clinic. I worked with patients suffering from brain injuries and diseases, including dementia and Spinocerebellar Degeneration, and the elderly. In 2018, I started my own business at SyncBody wher I focus on providing high quality therapeutic treatment and corrective exercises to restore and enhance neuromuscular function and performance to athletes, performing artists, and the physically active population.

Assistant Athletic Trainer
Men's Soccer

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2017-19

The UC Davis Fellowship Program helped me grow professionally and personally. This provided an autonomous role that allowed me to develop my critical thinking and decision-making skills that are vital to be a great clinician, while still providing mentorship and direction that I needed. I feel the sports medicine staff is very knowledgeable, personable, and highly invested in cultivating young professionals such as myself.

I was challenged in a variety of different scenarios including but not limited to; communication conflicts, administrative duties, mentoring students, medical decision making, and rehabilitation of rare conditions and injuries. Not only have a I grown as a clinician, but I have grown as an individual. I built genuine relationships with my colleagues and superiors and have developed interpersonal skills that I can utilize in any of life circumstances. With the experience I gained at UC Davis, I feel very confident stepping forward into a new and bigger role as a full-time staff at another institution.

My favorite memory while working at UC Davis was witnessing my post-operative athletes return to play after a long recovery. As a brand new certified athletic trainer, it's easy to feel intimidated by post-operative care when you don't have experience to go off. It takes a lot of research, trial and error — two steps forward and one step backwards — and most importantly relentless heart. Watching my athletes grow physically and emotionally through the ups and downs of rehabilitation and then witnessing all of their hard work payoff is something I will always cherish.

I know I will experience cases like these over and over at any future position I may hold, but these were my first and I will never have another first.

Anthony Peters

Anthony Peters, MS, ATC
Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2015-2016

As a fellow working alongside the UC Davis Sports Medicine Staff, I was able to further my clinical and interpersonal skills as an athletic trainer. I worked in a fast paced, team-based environment with the UC Davis football team, which made me highly resourceful and improved my time management skills. I also was given autonomy with the baseball team where I could critically think and make my own decisions. UC Davis helped me cultivate the skills I needed to be a successful athletic trainer in Division I athletics.

My year at UC Davis was a great experience. Working with the men's water polo & women's lacrosse teams gave me experience with a variety of injuries, rehabs, and evaluations. Working at UC Davis afforded me another year of experience to improve my skills in athletic training, management, and professionalism.

Bronson K Sagon

Bronson K. Sagon, MS, ATC, LAT
Texas Christian University
Assistant Athletic Trainer
Cross Country/Track & Field

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2015-2016

My experience at UC Davis truly taught me how to interact with student-athletes in a more holistic way. I am able to connect with my athletes on a level that allows me to practice patient-centered care, as opposed to clinician-directed care, which I strongly value. Putting my student-athletes at the forefront of any decision-making process has helped define a strong part of who I am as a clinician.

Torie (Johnson) Torrence, MS, ATC
Oklahoma State University
Assistant Athletic Trainer
Softball

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2017-19

This program helped me to grow as an athletic trainer by giving me the autonomy that comes with working with my own teams, while giving me mentorship and guidance along the way. I directed numerous athletes through season-ending injuries, surgery, return to competition, learned how to effectively communicate with coaches and other medical staff regarding injury status and progression on a daily basis, supervised and taught undergraduate students, and assisted with various administrative Sports Medicine duties.  I believe these experiences, along with extra training (Dry Needling, BFR, concussion sub-typing) that were offered at UC Davis were extremely helpful in gaining a well-rounded athletic training experience, which helped me become a more complete athletic trainer.

My favorite memories while working at UC Davis were seeing the student-athletes who suffered season-ending injuries return to competition after a year of hard work and rehab.

David Wacker, MS, ATC OPE-C
Muir Orthopedic Specialists
Athletic Trainer

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2017-19

The fellowship program at UC Davis helped me grow not only as a professional, but more so as an individual. Everyone on staff is invested in making fellows the best individuals that they can be. With the staff being supportive as they are, it helped me realize my true career goals and they all had a hand in helping me achieve them.

If I had not been a part of this fellowship program for the last two years, building relationships and seeking guidance from everyone on staff, I truly believe that I would not move on to my dream position.

Lauren Wagner

Lauren Wagner, MA, ATC

Assistant Athletic Trainer
Men's and Women's XC/ Track, Women's Volleyball, Women's Basketball

Member of UC Davis Sports Medicine: 2016-2017

My fellowship experience at UC Davis assisted me in my overall growth as a Certified Athletic Trainer. Given this experience straight from graduate school was helpful in that I was in a position with a mentor but still had full autonomy of my sport assignments. Not only did I learn from my mentors and the leaders at UC Davis, but from the athletes as well. I want to thank everyone in athletics at UC Davis for a great experience and in helping me get to where I am today.
