UC Davis Undergraduates Pass Campus Expansion Initiative

Nov. 14, 2002

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis undergraduate students voted 4,638 to 3,929 in favor of Part A of the Campus Expansion Initiative during Associated Students of the University of California, Davis elections conducted this week.

Results of the ASUCD elections - which began Tuesday and concluded on Thursday morning - were announced on Thursday afternoon in the Mee Room of the Memorial Union at UC Davis. According to ASUCD, the 9,657 total votes cast in the fall election were the most ever for a campus election.

The student vote is advisory to campus administration.

Part A of the Campus Expansion Initiative asked whether students would support an increase in student fees to help fund a possible reclassification by UC Davis from NCAA Division II to Division I status. Other components of Part A included an expansion of both the ASUCD Coffee House and Unitrans bus service, as well as funds to support the Sports Clubs and Intramural Sports Programs, a "Principles of Community Center," and funds for return to aid - which would provide support for undergraduate students with the greatest financial need.

UC Davis is currently discussing a possible move to the Big West Conference and NCAA Division I status. The ballot calls for student fees to increase by $15 per quarter beginning in 2003-04 in support of athletics grants-in-aid, increasing to $61 per quarter beginning in 2006-07. If UC Davis does not reclassify to NCAA Division I status, then student fees for athletics grants-in-aid will not be collected.
