DAVIS, Calif. -
Jane Gottesman, whose book "Game Face" is a pictorial answer to the question "What does a female athlete look like," will be the featured speaker at a free presentation at the UC Davis Memorial Union on Tuesday.
Gottesman, a former sports reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, will speak in the MU II Room at 7 p.m. Her appearance is being sponsored by UC Davis Athletics, the campus' Women's Resources and Research Center and the UC Davis Office of the Provost.
The book - in which Gottesman served as editor - is part of the larger "Game Face" project which also includes a photo exhibition currently traveling the country. The entire project celebrates women's athletics with photographs from some of the country's top photographers. Its nationwide tour began last year at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
"Women's athletics have made great strides since the passage of Title IX 30 years ago," said Pam Gill-Fisher, UC Davis Associate Director of Athletics. "This presentation is a great opportunity for people to hear the stories behind 'Game Face' and just how far women's athletics have come."
Gottesman will speak about the origins, development and purpose of the "Game Face" project and will be joined by Geoffrey Biddle, co-curator of "Game Face," and a photographer and educator. Biddle will talk about the decision-making process for the photos used in "Game Face."
The evening will also feature a short DVD presentation and a question-and-answer session. Copies of the "Game Face" book will be available afterward for signing by Gottesman and Biddle.
