Sports Illustrated Recognizes UC Davis As Best In NCAA Division II

Oct. 3, 2002

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis is the best NCAA Division II school in the country for athletics, according to a story published in the Oct. 7 issue of Sports Illustrated currently on newsstands.

The published piece is contained inside a larger cover story which ranked all 324 Division I athletic programs for the 2001-02 academic year, while also mentioning the top Division II and III schools in the country. Williams College (Mass.) is noted as best in Division III, while Texas topped the Division I rankings.

In an article written by Sports Illustrated writer George Dohrmann, UC Davis is noted for the size and breadth of its intercollegiate athletic program, location, and intramural and sports clubs opportunities.

"It's an honor to be recognized by Sports Illustrated and I think it provides another opportunity for us to showcase what is great about this campus," said Director of Athletics Greg Warzecka." The opportunities for students to participate in athletics and recreation at UC Davis are enormous and we're proud of that distinction."

Among the items cited by Sports Illustrated are that UC Davis has the largest varsity student-athlete population (765) in Division II, 32 sports club teams, has captured five Sears Directors' Cups and that the average SAT score for its most recent incoming class is 1,130. Additionally, it noted UC Davis' high intramural participation of 14,000 students.

UC Davis was twice recognized as the best Division II school for women athletes by the magazine's related publication, Sports Illustrated for Women; most recently in 2000.
