June 17, 2002

DALLAS, Texas - UC Davis Director of Athletics Greg Warzecka was named June 17 as winner of The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) AD of the Year for the NCAA Division II West Region.

A total of 25 individuals, representing Divisions I-A, I-AA/I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions in each of four regions along with an international honoree, were honored by NACDA on Monday. Winners were presented with their awards on June 17 during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon at NACDA's annual convention.

"Our Honors and Awards Committee recognized a need for an award such as the AD of the Year," said NACDA Executive Director Mike Cleary in a press release from the organization. "The program brings to light the exceptional jobs done by athletics directors across the country. These 25 winners exemplify that, providing us with a group of outstanding athletics directors who excel at their jobs."

Warzecka has been at UC Davis since 1995, during which time he has overseen a program that has captured four Sears Directors' Cups, added a program to offer more than $550,000 in athletics grants-in-aid and is in the process of planning and building nearly $30 million in

new athletics facilities. Additionally, Warzecka has served on several committees for the California Collegiate Athletic Association and has been a member of the NCAA Division II West Region Men's Basketball and Football Advisory Committees. He was recently appointed to the NCAA Division II Football Issues Review Project.

UC Davis has 25 varsity sports - 13 for women and 12 for men - with more than 800 student-athletes participating.
