Complete NACDA Directors' Cup Information

DAVIS, Calif. - Five-time champion UC Davis sored 213 points during the winter sports seasons and is in third place with 469 points heading into the spring in the race for the NACDA Directors' Cup for NCAA Division II, it was announced on Thursday.

The NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) Directors' Cup program award is presented each year to the most successful athletic programs at each of the NCAA Division I, II and III levels, as well as the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Points are awarded to schools whose teams advance to NCAA or NAIA Championship play. Division II scoring is based on a school's finish in up to 14 sports - seven each for men and women. Each national champion receives 100 points, with remaining points determined by the size of the championship.

South Dakota State, which won the Division II women's basketball championship, also had 10th-place finishes in women's indoor track and field and wrestling during the winter, scored 341 points and is atop the standings with 554. Grand Valley State (Mich.) highlighted its winter sports seasons with a seventh-place in women's indoor track and field and is second with 498.

UC Davis scored in four sports during the winter, receiving 75 from its fifth-place men's swimming and diving, 72 from women's swimming and diving (6th place), 52.5 from women's indoor track and field (20th) and 13.5 from wrestling (59th, Div. I). The Aggies lead fourth-place Western State (Colo.) by a half-point with Cal State Bakersfield in fifth with 453.5.

The only other program with more than 400 points is North Florida, which is in sixth place with 411.5.

UC Davis has won the NACDA Directors' Cup - formerly known as the Sears Directors' Cup - five times during the award's seven-year history, including the past three. The Aggies were in sixth place after the winter seasons last year.

The scoring structure for the NACDA Cup has changed for the 2002-03 race. Changes include expanding the minimum number of teams in a sport's championship field to 12 and adjusting the point totals for team finishes other than first place. Based upon these changes, women's rowing, women' water polo and women's lacrosse - each sponsored by UC Davis - will not be able to score points toward the program this year.
