New Aggies Costumed Mascot Needs A Name

New Aggies Costumed Mascot Needs A Name

Feb. 4, 2003

AGGIELAND, Calif. - UC Davis fans have the opportunity to cast their vote to name the Aggies' new costumed mascot, which made its debut during last weekend's men's and women's basketball games at Recreation Hall.

While already a fan favorite, the mascot still needs a name and the monikers Gunrock and Ollie are the two finalists.

Gunrock's roots at UC Davis trace back more than 80 years to the early 1920's. Students chose a mustang horse as the school's mascot in honor of Gun Rock, a close relative to famed racehorse Man o' War. Gun Rock was brought to campus to supply high-quality stock for the U.S. Army calvary. The two-word spelling of the name was combined to just Gunrock years later.

Ollie is believed to have originated as the name given to the mustang mascot and has been a fixture in campus lore since.

The new mascot is designed after the youth mark on UC Davis Athletics' official set of logos. Voting will conclude on Friday.
