DAVIS, Calif. -
Bolstered by four finishes in the top 10 during NCAA Championship competition, three-time defending champion UC Davis scored 256 points and is in second place in the NACDA Directors' Cup standings for Division II after the fall season.
The NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) Directors' Cup program award is presented each year to the most successful athletic programs at each of the NCAA Division I, II and III levels, as well as the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Points are awarded to schools whose teams advance to NCAA or NAIA Championship play. Division II scoring is based on a school's finish in up to 14 sports - seven each for men and women. Each national champion receives 100 points, with remaining points determined by the size of the championship.
The fall standings include results for men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball. UC Davis scored points in four of the possible six sports, tallying ties for fifth place in women's soccer (70 pts) and football (60). Men's cross country was eighth (66) and women's cross country placed 10th (60).
Grand Valley State (Mich.), which won the national championship in football and was third in both women's volleyball and women's cross country, leads with 331 points. North Florida is in third place with 228 points, South Dakota State is fourth with 213 and Western State (Colo.) is fifth with 200 points. Chico State (13th) and UC San Diego (T14th) are other California Collegiate Athletic Association schools in the top 20, scoring 150 and 142 points, respectively.
UC Davis has won the NACDA Directors' Cup - formerly known as the Sears Directors' Cup - five times during the award's seven-year history, including the past three. The Aggies were third after last year's fall season, and sixth after the winter, before using a strong spring campaign to capture the title with 743 points.
The scoring structure for the NACDA Cup has changed for the 2002-03 race. Changes include expanding the minimum number of teams in a sport's championship field to 12 and adjusting the point totals for team finishes other than first place.
