The short story:
UC Davis softball dropped a pair of games to Cal State Fullerton in its Big West doubleheader, Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field.

LEADING OFF
  • In the second game of the day, the Aggies showed off their power, when Kaylin Phillips and Alyssa Dethlefson hit back-to-back home runs
  • The duo become the first Aggies to go back-to-back since 2020, when Riley Siegel and Delaney Diaz hit a pair of home runs one right after the other against Portland State
  • Sydney Polli and Gia Felice both had three hits on the day, with Felice scoring a run while Polli knocked in a run
  • Claire Shelton added a pair of hits and a run scored
  • Caroline Grimes tossed a complete game with three strike outs
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
  • Both sides battled to a scoreless tie after the opening two frames, with Grimes recording a strikeout in each inning
  • But in the top of the third, the Titans would score three runs with a two-run home run doing the heavy lifting
  • Grimes kept Fullerton off the board long enough for the Aggies to mount a comeback, and in the fifth UC Davis walked its way to a lead
  • UC Davis loaded the bases and with one out began to move themselves freely around the bases, getting RBI walks from Phillis, Dethlefson, Polli (HBP) and Marley Panziera to put the Aggies in front 4-3 heading into the sixth frame
  • Unfortunately, the Aggie lead would be short lived as Fullerton would plate two runs in the sixth to retake the lead at 5-4
  • The Titans would hold that lead for the final two Aggie frames, taking a closely contested first game of the doubleheader
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
  • Cal State Fullerton scored four runs in the second and two in the third, to take a 6-0 lead over the opening three frames
  • The Titans would add one more in the sixth, giving Fullerton a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the frame
  • In that bottom of the sixth, UC Davis got its back-to-back power, and the spark was started when Felice lead off with a walk
  • Phillips then entered the game as a pinch hitter, and on a 3-1 count hit her first career home run over the left field fence to plate Felice and make it 7-2
  • Dethlefson followed that up in the next at-bat, taking a 3-2 pitch over the same left field wall to go back-to-back with Phillips and make it 7-3
  • In the top of the seventh Fullerton would build back out its lead, scoring four runs to set up its 11-3 win in the second game of the doubleheader
