THE SHORT STORY: UC Davis baseball dropped a 4-0 decision to visiting UC Santa Barbara on Friday night at Dobbins Stadium. Despite a stellar, shut-down effort from the Aggie bullpen in the late innings, the offense was stifled by a dominant starting pitching performance from UC Santa Barbara's Jackson Flora.
LEADING OFF
- The Aggie staff provided a major bright spot. Jack Meek and Tyler Wood combined to throw 2.1 perfect innings of relief, allowing zero hits and striking out four batters to keep the team within striking distance.
- Wood and Meek backed up starter Noel Valdez who despite taking the loss, managed to strike out six batters over his 6.2 innings of work.
- Wood was highly effective, tossing 1.2 shutout frames and striking out three to quiet the UCSB bats down the stretch.
- Zach Story and Ryan Lee recorded the lone hits for UC Davis on the evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UC Santa Barbara opened the scoring with a two-run second inning and doubled its advantage with another two-run frame in the fifth.
- Trailing 4-0, the UC Davis bullpen entered in the seventh and completely shut down the Gauchos the rest of the way, giving the offense a chance to claw back into the game.
- However, the Aggie bats were unable to string together a rally against UCSB starter Jackson Flora, who tossed 7.1 dominant innings, striking out 11 and scattering just two hits to secure the win before handing it over to the bullpen.
