THE SHORT STORY: Trailing by four runs late in the game, UC Davis authored a comeback for the ages on Friday night. Down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth, the Aggies got a clutch, game-tying RBI single from Houston Hirschkorn to force extra innings. Then, in the bottom of the 10th, Zach Story launched a dramatic, walk-off solo home run to lift UC Davis past Nevada, 5-4.
LEADING OFF
- Zach Story was the hero of the night, finishing with three hits, two runs scored, and the game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Story finished the night going 3-for-6.
- Tyler Howard continued his stellar stretch at the plate, tallying a pair of hits, including a double, and crossing the plate twice.
- Evan Gentil and Houston Hirschkorn each came through when it mattered most. Gentil ripped a two-run double in the seventh inning, and Hirschkorn tied the game in the ninth with a clutch RBI single.
- Elijah McNeal recorded a multi-hit game, finishing the night 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
- Noel Valdez was brilliant in his start on the mound, tossing six strong innings while striking out six and allowing just one earned run.
- Peter Storjohann completely neutralized the Nevada offense in relief, earning the win after firing 3.1 scoreless, one-hit innings with five strikeouts to give the Aggies a chance to rally.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nevada landed the first blow in the top of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead behind an RBI single.
- The Wolf Pack offense strung together a rally in the seventh inning, pushing across three runs to extend their lead to 4-0.
- UC Davis answered however in the bottom of the seventh. An error allowed Elijah McNeal to score, and Gentil followed shortly after with a massive two-run double to cut the deficit to 4-3.
- With their backs against the wall in the bottom of the ninth, the Aggies manufactured the tying run. Hirschkorn stepped to the plate and ripped a clutch RBI single to score Howard and dramatically level the game at 4-4.
- Storjohann slammed the door out of the bullpen in the eighth, ninth, and top of the 10th innings, flawlessly shutting down the Wolf Pack to set the stage for the dramatic finish.
- In the bottom of the 10th inning, Story launched a walk-off solo home run to left field, clinching the 5-4 victory for UC Davis.
