The short story: The UC Davis women's basketball team dropped their first home conference game against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Aggies were led in scoring by Tova Sabel with 11 points and Ryann Bennett with 10 points.

OPENING TIP
  • Tova Sabel led her team with 11 points while also grabbing seven rebounds.
  • Ryann Bennett's 10 points marked the third time in her freshman season that she's hit double-digit points.
  • Bennett also led the second unit with 25 minutes off the bench.
  • The Aggies stayed aggressive on the boards, pulling down eight offensive rebounds.
  • Davis went to the line 19 times throughout the contest, the Gauchos only shot six free throws.

WHAT HEAD COACH JENNIFER GROSS HAD TO SAY

"They did well, they sped us up and we need to be better about taking a breath and being ourselves by executing our offense."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Aggies got things going quickly, with a layup from Mazatlan Harris and a triple from Nya Epps opening the game.
  • The offense continued to click throughout the first, with Sabel and Victoria Baker adding on triples to see their team up 16-10 through the game's first ten minutes.
  • Despite free throws from Sabel and Megan Norris, a 15-0 run from Santa Barbara saw them jump out to a 32-19 lead going into halftime.
  • Coming out of the locker room, the Aggies continued to fight, with buckets from Harris and Sydney Burns keeping them within single digits.
  • A last-second layup from Norris closed the third quarter with the Ags down only eight, 39-47.
  • The fourth saw much of the same from both sides, with the Gauchos using free throws to build an 11-point lead at the halfway point of the quarter.
  • Epps and Bennett would add on quick baskets in the game's final minutes, but it wasn't enough as the team would ultimately fall 50-63.

UP NEXT: The Aggies will hit the road once again as they travel across the Pacific to the Aloha State to face off against the Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors on Thursday, Jan. 23. The matchup is set to begin at 10:00 p.m. PT and will be live for Aggie fans to watch on ESPN+ and listen on KDVS 90.3.
