UC Davis Men's Basketball Finalizes 2024-25 Roster with Trio of Transfers

DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis head men's basketball coach Jim Les has finalized his 2024-25 roster with the addition of three transfers: guard Carl Daughtery Jr., forward Derek Sangster, and forward Jamaal Unuakhalu.

Daughtery Jr. joins the Aggies as a junior after spending the past two seasons at the University of Central Arkansas. The 6-foot-3 guard averaged nearly 10 points and 2.7 rebounds per game last season, finishing third in scoring for the Bears. Over two seasons, he appeared in 52 games and started 10 during his sophomore campaign. Daughtery Jr. was a reliable player on both ends of the floor, finishing ASUN play this past year with top-20 rankings in usage rate, steal rate, and offensive rebound rate.

"Carl is an explosive guard who can impact the game on both ends of the floor. We love that he is an aggressive, physical, and disruptive defender. He is also a 'microwave' on the offensive end with his ability to score in a variety of ways," said Les.

Daughtery Jr. had standout performances this past season, including scoring 23 points in games against a pair of Power-4 schools in the form of Missouri and Kansas State. In high school, he was an all-state performer, averaging over 18 points per game at Maumelle High School and scoring over 1,000 career points.

Sangster, a 6-foot-8 forward, joins UC Davis after spending his freshman season at Princeton. The California native appeared in 13 games for the Tigers, with a standout performance of 11 points in a win over Delaware Valley.

"Shooting is a premium in our system, and Derek will be one of the best shooters on our team. At 6-foot-8, he has excellent versatility to play multiple positions, and we are happy that he is back home in Northern California," Les added.

Before Princeton, Sangster was one of the most highly-touted prospects in the class of 2023. The former three-star recruit was ranked as the 46th best player by 247Sports. His high school career was decorated with numerous accolades, including being named the 2023 Conference Player of the Year, earning two-time First Team All-Conference honors, and being recognized as the Central Coast Section Scholar-Athlete of the Year twice. Additionally, he was a three-time member of the California All-State team, a three-time Conference Champion, a Central Coast Section Champion, and a member of the 1,000 Point Club at Archbishop Mitty.

Unuakhalu, a 6-foot-7 forward, rounds out the group. He joins the Aggies after two seasons at Moorpark College. As a sophomore, Unuakhalu averaged 14.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, helping lead Moorpark to a 22-7 record. He led the conference in rebounding, ranked second in field goal percentage, and as a result was named the WSC-North Conference Defensive Player of the Year while also earning a spot on the First Team.

"Jamaal will be one of the most athletic players in our program since I've been here. He runs easy, plays above the rim, and affects the game in many ways because of his versatility and how hard he plays," Les said.

Prior to his standout sophomore season, Unuakhalu averaged 7.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Before Moorpark, he played for Chatsworth High School, where he earned All-City honors in both basketball and volleyball.

"Aggie fans are going to love the talent and tenacity that this group will bring to our team," Les added.
