The short story: In a classic pitchers' duel,
Bryan Green delivered one of the all-time great Aggie performances on the mound in recent memories, going seven and a third innings hitless, but UC Santa Barbara's Ryan Gallagher was equally as good, recording a complete game shutout to lead the Gauchos to a series opening win.
LEADING OFF
- Bryan Green threw a gem, going 7.1 innings, allowing just one earned run, striking out nine in his best start of his career
- Ryan Gallagher from UC Santa Barbara came through on the other side with perhaps the best outing of any Big West pitcher this season, throwing a complete game shutout
- Mark Wolbert and Nick Leehey came through with both of the Aggie hits on the day, each finishing the day 1-for-3
- The Gauchos were led offensively by freshman Jonathan Mendez, who went 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI to break up Green's no-hitter
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pitching dominated the action from the start, with UC Santa Barbara getting the scoring started by capitalizing on a pair of Aggie errors to take a 1-0 lead in the third
- The Aggies made an effort in the fourth inning, and took a chance on an infield single from Wolbert but Damian Stone was thrown out at the plate to keep the Aggies in check
- With Gallagher facing only two batters over the minimum, he kept the Aggies off balance the rest of the game and commanded the strikezone in route to a 3-0 shutout win in the series opener
NOTABLES
- Green's 7.1 innings were a season-high for an Aggie and his career-high
- Green's nine strikeouts tied Noel Valdez's for most by an Aggie on the year
