Aggies Drop Pair of Extra-Inning Contests

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- UC Davis battled in a pair of extra inning contests on Saturday afternoon, but the reigning Big West Champions, Long Beach State, walked off the Aggies in back-to-back games to win the series.

It was a day where pitching was dominant with both contests proving to be pitcher's duels. Ashley Sawai was excellent in her outing, tossing six innings of scoreless ball. She handed the ball off to Sarah Reineman who impressed in her three innings, but UC Davis could not provide support for their Aggies in the circle and The Beach would capitalize by doing just enough at the plate to earn two wins.

Despite the defeats, UC Davis will celebrate Anna Dethlefson's outstanding milestone as she reaches 93 career stolen bases to become the program's all-time stolen base leader.

GAME 1 | Long Beach State 2, UC Davis 1 (11 inn.)
The Aggies' lone run of the ballgame came in the team's first turn at the plate when Bella Pahulu's triple to right field scored Leah Polson – who started the two-out rally with her base hit – from first base.

Sawai was excellent in her six innings of work, surrendering just four hits and two walks. Sawai did not record a strikeout but proved to be extremely effective while pitching to contact.

The right hander finally ran into some trouble in the sixth frame when the hosts rallied for back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Sarah Reineman came on to relieve Sawai, looking to preserve the tie. The Beach put runners on first and third with just one out, but Reineman pulled off the escape by inducing two straight ground outs to get out of the inning unscathed and send the game to extras.

Reineman continued to cruise in what became a solid relief appearance for the Red Bluff native as she threw three scoreless innings before Long Beach State finally got to her in the bottom of the 11th. The Beach finally pushed the winning run across when Selena Perez singled through the left side to give her team the 2-1 win.

GAME 2 | Long Beach State 1, UC Davis 0 (8 inn.)
It was a scoreless seven frames to start the contest until Long Beach State finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth inning, winning the series after earning back-to-back wins.

Kenedi Brown took the tough-luck loss despite her masterful outing in the circle. The right-hander went 7.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits, allowing five walks and striking out eight.

UC Davis managed one chance with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The Aggies last got a runner on third in the seventh, when junior Grace Kilday made it 60 feet away from scoring with one out.
