Aggies Pick Up Important Win at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - Points were hard to come by for three quarters, but an explosive final 10 minutes allowed UC Davis to pick up a comfortable 61-48 win at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night.

The Aggies (12-10, 8-4 Big West) had three players score in double figures, led by Tova Sabel, who had 17 points and seven rebounds. Evanne Turner tacked on 14 points and Sydney Burns chipped in as well with 10 points and three steals.

UC Davis did well on the boards, out-rebounding the Titans 33-30. Megan Norris pulled down a team-high nine boards to go along with her seven points.

The UC Davis defense held Cal State Fullerton shooters to only 36.5% from the field, and just 15.4% from three-point range. The Aggies also kept leading scorer Gabi Vidmar to just four points and 1-of-6 from the field. The Titans did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored two second chance points while UC Davis pulled down 24 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened
UC Davis struggled out of the gate, falling behind 12-7 at the end of the first quarter after going just 3-of-13 through the first 10 minutes.

Cal State Fullerton kept the momentum and the Aggies couldn't seem to find any rhythm offensively, but a 7-0 run got them back in the game, knotting things up at 16-16. Cal State Fullerton then took control, putting the Aggies at a 24-22 disadvantage heading into halftime.

UC Davis came out of halftime on fire, going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Sabel, to grab a 30-24 lead with 4:53 to go in the third. The Aggies held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 36-30 edge. UC Davis started to move the ball well to create some easy layups, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint.

UC Davis kept widening that lead, expanding it to 52-45 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Turner's layup, to grow the lead to 59-45 with 34 seconds to go in the contest. The Titans narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Aggies still cruised the rest of the way for the 61-48 win. UC Davis took advantage of four Cal State Fullerton turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
