DAVIS, Calif. -- Caroline Grimes delivered seven innings of brilliance in UC Davis' 3-1 win over California Baptist, earning her first career complete game victory to clinch the series win on Saturday afternoon at La Rue Field.
Grimes picked up the win after surrendering just one run in her 127-pitch outing. The right-hander did not record a strikeout but was extremely effective pitching to contact, scattering six hits and four walks while allowing just one run.
Offensively, the Aggies were led by Libbie McMahan, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Sarah Starks also produced a noteworthy performance at the dish, going 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Anna Dethlefson scored two of the Aggies' three runs in her 1-for-3 day at the plate. The Fair Oaks native was dangerous on the base paths as well, stealing two bases in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Grimes cruised through her first inning in the circle before the Aggies went to work in the bottom half. Dethlefson led things off by legging out an infield hit and continued to show her speed by swiping second base. McMahan was next up and roped a double down the left field line, trading places with Dethlefson to give her team the lead.
After a scoreless second inning, California Baptist strung together a couple base hits to even things up in the top of the third. UC Davis answered in the bottom half, however, when Grimes stepped to the plate to draw a walk to lead off the inning before McMahan's second hit of the day and a sharp line drive to right field by Starks resulted in two runs for Davis' team, making it a 3-1 ballgame.
In the top of the fourth, Grimes danced her way out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing a ground ball and a fly ball to get out of the inning unscathed. This gave Grimes the momentum she needed to finish job as she tossed three more scoreless innings to conclude her excellent outing.
