DAVIS, Calif. — Despite a strong performance by junior Nick Leehey, who drove in two runs and hit a double, the UC Davis Aggies suffered a 20-4 loss to the BYU Cougars on Thursday.
Senior Ian Torpey (0-1) took the loss for UC Davis (2-2) after relieving the starter and although he took this result, was one of the more effective arms for the Aggies today. Senior Kaden Riccomini impressed the most on the mound for UC Davis, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Aggies showed some resilience at the plate, with Leehey leading the charge by going 2-for-3. Junior Alex Gouveia also contributed with a double and a walk, while junior Mark Wolbert added an RBI single.
UC Davis will square off against BYU for game two of the series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. (PT) with action slated to be covered through ESPN+ for the first time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies erased an early 2-0 deficit in the first inning, scoring two runs on Leehey's single. They took the lead in the second inning, when Junior Jason Hanson came across to score the lone run of the inning for UC Davis, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Aggies. They extended their lead to 4-2 in the third inning, when Leehey doubled home another run. However, the Cougars exploded for 18 runs in the next six innings, sealing the 20-4 victory.
