The short story: UC Davis women's basketball scored 31 fast break points, fueled by redshirt junior
Victoria Baker's 16 points off the bench, to pace themselves to a season opening win over Simpson.
OPENING TIP
- As a team the Aggies scored 42 points off the bench
- Four Aggies finished in double figures
- Baker went 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, finishing 6-for-9 from the field, adding five rebounds and three assists
- Senior Tova Sabel netted 18 points, going 6-for-10 from the field and adding four assists and five boards
- Senior Mazatlan Harris scored 12 points, shooting a solid 5-for-8 from the field
- Redshirt junior Megan Norris shot 4-for-7 and snagged a team-high six rebound, adding 11 points to the mix
- UC Davis shot 47.2 percent (34-72) from the field and hit a nearly lights out 44.1 (15-34) percent from beyond the arc
- Defensively the Aggies forced 27 turnovers and held Simpson to 22.6 percent shooting from the field, scoring 33 points off the Simpson miscues
- The Aggies did not allow a single Red Hawk to score in double figures
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Over the opening four minutes of the game, the Aggies jumped out to a 12-2 lead and did not look back
- In that stretch Sabel and Baker hit threes to help stretch the early lead
- Norris hit a layup in the final seconds of the opening quarter to finish off a period where the Aggies scored 26 points and took a commanding 22-point lead into the second quarter
- Early in the second quarter, Sable showed her abilities to do it on both ends, nailing a three pointer to put the Aggies back up by 20 points at 29-9
- She then stole the ball on the next possession, feeding sophomore Clara Glad who hit a layup to add to the lead
- Sable and Baker went shot-for-shot from beyond the arc to put the Aggies up by 32 points and after a layup from junior Ally Fitzgerald in the final minute the Aggies went into the break up 49-13
- Harris scored early and late in the third quarter, hitting a three pointer before following that up with a layup on a fast break at the 7:30 mark. She then nailed the final layup of the quarter, as the Aggies entered the fourth quarter up 67-22
- The scoring continued for the Aggie senior as Harris netted the four points of the fourth quarter with back-to-back baskets
- Norris rounded out the Aggie points from the field with a layup late in the quarter, and with the final whistle came a season opening 93-36 win over Simpson

- Head coach Jennifer Gross now has 238 career wins. The Cal Aggie Hall of Famer now sits just 13 wins away from tying Sandy Simpson, who owns the school record for all-time wins as head coach at 251
- Sable now has 1,090 career points and she moves into 17th all-time in program history for career points scored
