Aggies Secure No. 2 Seed After Dominant Win Over CSUN

Score:  UC Davis 3, CSUN 0
Location: Davis, Calif.
Records:  UC Davis 13-4-2 (6-2-2), CSUN 5-11-3 (3-4-3)

The short story: UC Davis women's soccer continued their winning streak, dominating CSUN 3-0 on Thursday night with their third consecutive shutout to claim the second seed in the upcoming Big West Championship.

PITCH SIDE
  • UC Davis concludes the regular season with 13 wins, the most in the program's Division I era
  • Bella Mayo stood out for the Aggies, helping secure the shutout on the backline while also providing two assists to lead the offense
  • Genavieve Fontes and Sam Tristan demonstrated why they top the conference rankings as goal scorers, each netting a goal to raise their season totals to 11 and 10, respectively, the only pair of players in the Big West with double-figure goals
  • This is only the second time in UC Davis history that two players have recorded double-figure goals in the same season, the last instance being in 1999
  • Reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week Caeley Goldstein etched her name into the record books as well, breaking the Division I era single-season save record with 92 saves and counting after recording seven against the Matadors
  • Also scoring for UC Davis was Sarah Canavan, securing the third and final goal out of the team's 15 total shots on the night
  • Alongside Mayo and Goldstein, Taylor Dever played the full 90 minutes

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UC Davis opened the scoring in the 16th minute off a perfectly executed set piece, with a perfectly placed ball from Mayo finding Tristan rising through the CSUN backline
  • Despite holding a 1-0 advantage, it was CSUN who appeared more aggressive early on, outshooting UC Davis 10-8 in the first half
  • However, the score remained in favor of UC Davis at 1-0 after the first 45 minutes
  • The Aggies would respond to the first half aggression of the Matadors and proceed to dominate, with Fontes scoring her Big West leading 11th goal in the 52nd minute, assisted again by Mayo, who earned her third assist of the season
  • Canavan would add yet another score to the Aggie attack, scoring her first goal of the season in the 58th minute to extend the lead to 3-0
  • While the UC Davis offense shined, the play of the game came from Goldstein, who made back-to-back saves in the 66th minute, denying what seemed like a certain goal on the follow-up shot
  • As the game went on, tempers would flare in the 69th minute with CSUN attempting a comeback, but Goldstein and the Aggie backline held firm to secure the team's third consecutive shutout

NEXT UP: With the regular season now concluded, the Aggies will turn their focus towards the Big West Championship, slotting in as the No. 2 seed with their matchup being against the winner of the No. 3/6 seed game. The Aggies are scheduled for kickoff next Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. PT in Hawai'i.
