IRVINE, Calif. -- UC Davis finally saw its win streak come to an end when UC Irvine proved to be tough to beat on its court, coming away with the 79-61 win on Saturday afternoon inside Bren Events Center.
The Aggies (9-9, 5-3 Big West) struggled to matchup on the boards as the Anteaters (11-6, 5-2 Big West) held a 31-26 rebounding advantage in the contest.
Mazatlan Harris shined for the Aggies, recording her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in her 27 minutes of action. The junior was 4-of-6 from the field in her outstanding display.
Tova Sabel poured in 13 points to see her streak of games in double-digits grow to 11 while
Evanne Turner nailed a couple three-pointers to finish with 13 points of her own.
Harris pulled down eight offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UC Davis, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into nine second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 20-9, UC Davis went on a 5-0 run with 36 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Victoria Baker, to narrow its deficit.. UC Irvine was a perfect 2-for-2 from the perimeter on their way to a 20-14 lead after one.
UC Davis then started off the second quarter with yet another 5-0 run, this time highlighted by a three from Sabel, to pull within one. The hosts responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Aggies trailing 44-31 heading into halftime.
UC Irvine continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 60-40 advantage before UC Davis went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Turner, to trim its deficit to 60-46 with 2:22 to go in the third. The Aggies were unable to cut further into the deficit, but did not cede ground to UC Irvine either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 63-49. UC Davis knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 18 total points.
UC Davis had too much of a hill to climb in the final period, falling by a final of 79-61 while seeing its five-game win streak come to an end.
