Davis, Calif. — A dominating performance saw the UC Davis women's soccer team defeat Idaho State 5-0 in the team's season opener.
Leslie Fregoso rang in the new season with a goal in the 20th minute by capitalizing on a penalty kick. Taking an early lead, the Aggies never looked back and piled on four more goals, with two, coming from newcomer Sam Tristan who shined in her Aggie debut.
Tristan set up Fregoso's goal by drawing a foul as she put pressure on the backline of Idaho State all game. An experienced newcomer into the fold for UC Davis, Tristan lived up to
Tracy Hamm's preseason report in her Aggie debut, as the former All-Mountain West striker concluded the game with four shots, and was responsible for drawing both Aggie penalty kicks.
Tristan also delivered a goal in the 26th minute, sneaking one past Idaho State's Lydia Keller off a rebounded shot from
Risa Yamada.
With the two goals coming early for UC Davis, the Aggies pushed the tempo and gave the visiting Bengals fits with their attack and pace in the California heat. Recording a whopping 14 shots in the first half, UC Davis would finish the game with 19.
Much of the same would take place in the second half, as the Aggies poured on three more goals.
After drawing the penalty which allowed for Fregoso's goal, Tristan drew another chance in the 49th minute, but this time she stepped up and buried home the penalty for herself, finding the lower right corner of the net.
A much anticipated return for
Risa Yamada, and she did not disappoint. In the 57th minute, she delivered a powerful left-footed shot past the keeper, finding the upper-left quadrant of the goal.
Capping off the scoring for UC Davis was
Devyn Simmons, who finished a beautiful header off a perfectly placed ball from freshman,
Savannah Cordero in the 82nd minute.
Along with the barrage of goals, the Aggies backline and midfield controlled the game. Limiting the Bengals to just eight shots, goalkeeper
Caeley Goldstein denied the lone shot on goal for Idaho State as UC Davis didn't allow the Bengal attack to develop a rhythm.

The Aggies will look to repeat this performance Sunday, as they are back in action against the Sacramento State Hornets. That game will take place at Hornet Field at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast to ESPN+.
