Davis, Calif. — After a lightning and rain delay pushed back the game's original start time by three hours, the UC Davis baseball team at the end of it all suffered a 8-1 defeat to bring the series against Cal Poly to a split.
A day that was dominated by inclement weather and delays, baseball was in fact played. Even though sunshine was donning on to Dobbins Stadium for the majority of the ballgame, the result was all but sunny. A tale of two completely different stories after shutting out the Mustangs yesterday in route to a 1-0 series opener win, the Aggies were plagued with errors early on, and a spectacular effort on the mound from the opposing Mustang staff.
Sophomore Carter Delaney (0-4) started and took the loss on the mound for UC Davis (16-26). After allowing an unearned run in the first, Delaney would settle in and deliver a clean second inning of work. It was in the third and fourth innings where trouble would arise for the UC Davis arms that was a combination of aggressive Cal Poly hitters, along with costly errors. Even with the trouble during those middle frames ultimately being the deciding factor for the day, the staff would shut down the Mustangs from the fifth inning on.
Contributing to that effort was freshman Zach Romero, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit.
Offensively for the Aggies, James Williams III would provide the lone RBI for UC Davis, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a double. Jack Gallagher was the lone Aggie to come across and score today and he also added to the offense today by going 1-for-3 with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies were trailing 8-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. UC Davis got on the board thanks to Williams' III RBI double with two outs. The Aggies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
