Aggies Drop Series Finale 13-4 to UC San Diego

La Jolla, Calif. — The Aggies got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Aggies fell to the UC San Diego Tritons 13-4 Saturday. A weekend that can be described only by heartbreak, the Aggies capped off the series with their largest loss margin of the three games in the finale.

Carter Delaney (0-2) started and took the loss on the mound for UC Davis (10-17). Navigating run-threatening situations throughout the game, Delaney did a good job of limiting the Tritons to just 1-for-5 when runners were in scoring position. Pitching just 2.1 innings, Delaney felt the impact of a defensive error and some long at-bats that resulted in walks. While the Tritons finished the day with 13 runs, almost half of them were unearned. A culmination of a series that just tilted in the favor of the Tritons at all the key moments, UC Davis can take a lot of positives away from the three-game set. Even with the errors, the pitching staff surrendered 13 free bases to Triton hitters with 10 base-on-balls, and three hit batters, again reiterating the heartbreak from the earlier games that seemed to creep into the series finale.

The outfield duo of Damian Stone and Mark Wolbert led the way offensively for the Aggies in this one. Stone was 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a double, two walks, and two runs scored. Wolbert put together a standout effort, going 2-for-5 with an RBI, being the lone Aggie to record multiple hits. Freshman Ryan Lee also helped out, going 1-for-4 for UC Davis with a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. UC Davis scored twice, with both runs coming across during a Wolbert at-bat. First, the Aggies got a run after a Triton balk, and then the other would come a few pitches later when Wolbert singled to right field.

The Tritons then rallied to score 13 runs and take a 13-2 lead before the Aggies got back on the board in the ninth. Lee's run-scoring single highlighted an inning where UC Davis scored twice, which brought the score to 13-4 in favor of the Tritons. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
