UC Davis Drops Matchup 6-5 to UC San Diego

La Jolla, Calif. — The UC Davis Aggies brought a 5-2 lead into the ninth inning, but could not hold on and fell 6-5 to the UC San Diego Tritons Friday night in a heartbreaker.

Freshman Alejandro Huezo started the ballgame and threw six innings, giving up only two runs, one earned, on seven hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. Putting together his most complete start of the season, Huezo kept the Triton hitters off-balance all night.

Fueled by another freshman offensively, Joey Wright for the second game in-a-row paced the Aggie offense, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a walk and two RBI on his base hit to left field in the sixth.

Senior James Williams III continued his way back on track, and provided UC Davis with a 2-for-5 effort. His day was highlighted by a double and an RBI. Williams III is tied with Jack Gallagher for the team's most RBI with 21.

Sophomore Nick Leehey was the final Aggie to record multiple hits, going 2-for-5 for UC Davis with a double and two runs scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. UC Davis got an RBI single from junior Alex Gouveia, scoring Williams III from second base.

The Tritons then tied the ballgame at one before the Aggies came back to reclaim their advantage in the fifth inning. UC Davis scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Williams III, which brought the Aggies lead to 2-1.

UC Davis kept UCSD scoreless before building their lead to 4-1 the following inning. The Aggies recorded two runs when a single from Wright brought home sophomores Mark Wolbert and Leehey.

The Tritons gained ground, closing the gap to 4-2 until UC Davis added some insurance in the seventh. The Aggies drove home a run when junior Gallagher drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Leehey, bringing the UC Davis advantage to 5-2.

Turning the game to the bullpen, Kaden Hogan was dealing for the majority of his appearance. Entering in the seventh, Hogan would go two shutout inning before hitting two Triton batters in the ninth. After Hogan the Aggies turned to Danny Carrion and it was the Triton middle of the order again who pushed all the right buttons. Picking up every important hit, the Aggies were ultimately unable to hold the lead, as UCSD scored four of their six runs over the final two innings to grab the 6-5 win.
