ABOUT THE AGGIES
UC Davis has experienced a roller coaster of a season. Games filled with thrills, extra inning heartbreakers, win on the road at ranked UCLA, the Aggies through the whole ride, can say they've grown as a program.
Riding behind Alex Gouveia and his offensive output, the Aggies have discovered a budding star. Ranking sixth in the nation in doubles and leading the Big West in the category by a fair margin, the Manteca product is the lone Aggie sporting a batting average over .300.
Pitching for UC Davis has been a combined effort. With growth throughout the season from Delaney, and Huezo in their first season with the Aggies, UC Davis has been finding success with a crop of returning arms that features Danny Carrion, Bryan Green, Kaden Hogan, Kaden Riccomini, and Nathan Peng.
Carrion has been a man on a mission as of late, recording the last three Aggie wins, two against UC Riverside, and also picking up the win on the road at UCLA. Building his stock with every appearance, the Winters native has formed into one of the best relievers in recent Aggie memory. The combination of Green starting with a relieving effort of Carrion is an ideal recipe for success among the Aggie coaching staff and is something UC Davis will hope to achieve this weekend at Santa Barbara to open up the series.
ABOUT THE GAUCHOS
A perennial Big West stalwart, the Gauchos are again one of the top teams in the nation. Leaning on a competitive pitching staff which ranks twelfth in the nation in ERA, and a powerful lineup with a Big West leading home run tally, the Gauchos enter the weekend with UC Davis full of momentum. Sweeping the Tritons from UC San Diego last weekend, the Gauchos were powered by recently crowned Big West Player of the Week, Broc Mortensen.
With Andrew Checketts at the helm for his 12th season at UC Santa Barbara, the Gauchos have posted forty win seasons the past two seasons, while also recording an impressive 13-2 record during the COVID-shortened season and 45 wins the year before that.
Retooling year after year, the Gauchos have been powered by a new face this season by the name of Corey Nunez. The freshman leads the Gauchos in batting average and is tied for the lead among Gaucho teammates in hits with 41.
UP NEXT
After the series against the Gauchos, the Aggies will take on the Pacific Tigers again, this time at Klein Family Field in Stockton. Time for that game is scheduled at 6:00 P.M. PT.
