Aggies drop second game of series to UC Riverside

Davis, Calif. — Four UC Davis players notched multiple hits, but the Aggies fell to the UC Riverside Highlanders 7-5 Saturday.

The Aggies drop to 13-21 on the season and 4-10 in Big West games. A rubber-match is set to take place tomorrow at 1:00 P.M. PT at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium as the Aggies look to earn their second Big West series win of the year.

Alejandro Huezo picked up the loss today in his start and moves his season record to 1-3 on the year. Junior Kaden Riccomini continues to be a highlight out of the bullpen for UC Davis. He would enter the game in the eighth inning and throw 1.1 shutout innings, allowing no hits in his appearance.

Junior Nick Iverson produced in a big way for the Aggies today, leading the team with three RBI, and finishing the day going 1-for-1 after entering in the seventh as a pinch hitter. It was in his pinch-hit appearance where Iverson would drive home two Aggies with a triple down the right field line, and he would pick up another RBI in the ninth with a sacrifice fly.

With four Aggies coming through with multiple hits, the Aggies got help from the middle of the order core of Mark Wolbert, Nick Leehey, Alex Gouveia and Ryan Lee. With the Aggies outhitting the Highlanders 10-9, UC Davis will look to limit the big inning in the series finale tomorrow to secure the series win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Aggies first put runs on the board in the first inning. UC Davis got on the board thanks to a Gouveia RBI double with one out. With Gouveia chipping in today, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, the Modesto Native keeps tacking onto his Big West leading double count of 18. The next closest player trails Gouveia by five.

The Highlanders then scored five runs to retake their advantage heading into the seventh inning, when the Aggies responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. UC Davis picked up a couple on a two-run triple from Iverson, which brought the score to 6-3 in favor of the Highlanders.

UC Riverside built their lead to 7-3 before the UC Davis offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 7-5 in the ninth. The Aggies scored twice, with one run coming across on freshman Joey Wright's single. The Aggies brought up the tying run to the plate, but were unable to score any more as the Highlanders held on to earn their first Big West victory this season.
