Aggies Snap Long Beach State's 15-Game Win Streak

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- UC Davis ended its regular season with a bang, taking down league-leading Long Beach State 65-56 to snap their 15-game win streak.

UC Davis (16-13, 12-7) concludes the regular season on a three-game win streak and seem to be playing its best basketball of the season, winning 10 of its last 13 contests. The Aggies have earned the No. 4 seed in the Big West Conference Tournament and will await the result of the UC Santa Barbara-Hawai'i game this evening to learn their opponent for the quarterfinal round.

Tova Sabel continued her excellent form, reaching double figures for the eighth-straight game, pouring in a game-high 25 points. The junior nailed six threes and grabbed six rebounds in her fantastic display. Her 12 fourth-quarter points were instrumental to UC Davis' road victory in Long Beach.

Evanne Turner solidified herself as the conference's leading scorer with her 17-point performance. At 15.1 points-per-game, she becomes the first Aggie since Morgan Bertsch (2018-19) to lead the Big West in scoring.

UC Davis shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 15 assists on 24 made field goals. Individually, Campbell Gray led the way for the Aggies with four assists and Mazatlan Harris also chipped in with three assists of her own.

How It Happened

After playing to a 5-5 tie early in the game, UC Davis went on an 11-0 run before the first media timeout when Sabel quickly hit two three-pointers and a mid-range jumper for eight early points. UC Davis relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 16 points and the defense stepped up, holding The Beach to 3-of-12 shooting.

UC Davis kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 9:27 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Megan Norris, to increase its lead to 22-9. The Beach cut the deficit to three points, but the Aggies still enjoyed a 29-24 advantage heading into halftime.

UC Davis continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run expand its lead further to 36-26 with 6:53 to go in the third. However, the hosts would respond with a 10-0 run when the Aggies went cold, enduring a scoring drought that lasted over five minutes. This made it a one-point (39-38) ballgame heading into the last 10 minutes.

The Beach carried that momentum into the final period, using an 8-3 run to gain the advantage. UC Davis responded well to the adversity with a 7-0 run, finished off by Harris' layup, to seize a 58-51 lead with 2:35 to go in the contest. Sabel came through in the clutch, scoring 12 fourth-quarter points to put her team out of sight. The Swedish guard nailed two triples in the last two minutes, putting the game to bed. The Aggies coasted the rest of the way for the 65-56 win.
