DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis women's water polo's win streak finally came to an end when No. 11 Michigan pulled out the 13-10 victory on Saturday afternoon at Schaal Aquatics Center.
UC Davis (13-9, 2-0 Big West) held the advantage in the shots column (29-22) but only placed 18 efforts on target while the Wolverines were much more clinical with their chances, converting 13 goals from their 17 shots on frame. The Aggies were unable to capitalize on their power-play opportunities, scoring just three times in 12 total chances.
Noëlle Wijnbelt led the Aggies with her second-straight four goal performance. The four-time All-American drew three exclusions as she received a lot of attention from the Michigan defense.
Kelly Hungerford enjoyed a fantastic game offensively by matching her season-high with four assists while scoring twice on the afternoon. She also picked up two steals on the defensive end of the pool.
Gianna Nocetti made a huge impact with five steals on the day while providing an assist on the other end.
How It Happened
Alyssa Lengtat won the opening sprint, but it was Michigan who struck first, netting two quick goals to open up a 2-0 lead inside two minutes. Wijnbelt then found the back of the cage to complete a successful UC Davis power play, cutting the lead in half. Three straight goals from the visitors allowed the Wolverines to build a 5-1 lead, but
Hailey Williams and Wijnbelt cut that deficit to just two goals just before the end of the first period.
Madison Sparre etched her name on the scoresheet early in the second quarter to keep the Aggies within striking distance. Goals from
Tess Fundter and
Grace Pelkey rounded out the scoring in the second half, and after the teams scored three goals each in the second period, UC Davis would trail 8-6 at the half.
Hungerford canceled out an early Michigan goal in the third quarter before the visitors extended their lead to three goals. Wijnbelt scored twice in the final period, and the Aggies clawed within one, but Michigan scored two more times in the last two minutes to edge the 13-10 win, bringing UC Davis' win streak to an end.
