NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
Alyssa Lengtat and
Grace Pelkey each tallied four goals to power UC Davis past No. 23 CSUN on Saturday afternoon as the Aggies open Big West play with an 11-7 victory.
UC Davis (11-8, 1-0 Big West) has won four matches in a row, and seven of its last eight. With today's victory, the Aggies complete the series sweep over CSUN. The hosts were stifled by UC Davis' suffocating defense, scoring just twice in the second half while the Aggies were able to separate themselves following a dominant third quarter showing when they out-scored the Matadors 3-1.
UC Davis were able to set the tone, winning three of the four sprints and went on to out-shoot the opposition 30-23.
Alyssa Lengtat netted a season-high four goals in her fifth multi-goal game while
Grace Pelkey continued her excellent form with four goals of her own, as she has now scored five goals in the last two games.
Nellie McAdams was solid between the posts, racking up nine saves on the day.
How It Happened
Pelkey and
Gianna Nocetti opened the scoring with two quick-fire goals to thrust the Aggies into the lead before the Matadors finally answered at the 4:07 mark. Lengtat found the back of the cage for her first goal of the day before
Kelly Hungerford scored with 30 seconds left in the first period, but CSUN would get one back to make the score 4-2 after eight minutes.
The hosts quickly leveled the contest at 4-4 in the second quarter but the dynamic duo of Pelkey and Lengtat restored the two-goal advantage. The teams traded goals in the last minute of the half, making the score 7-5 at the break.
Lengtat's fourth goal of the game opened the second-half scoring and then the Aggies' defense stepped up, holding CSUN to just two goals for the remainder of the game.
Noëlle Wijnbelt got her goal early in the third quarter and Pelkey wrapped things up in the final period with her fourth goal of the game to punctuate the 11-7 win.
