Aggies Send Off Seniors with Huge Win Over Mustangs

DAVIS, Calif. – The seniors of UC Davis women's basketball enjoyed the perfect send off in their final game inside the University Credit Union Center, defeating Cal Poly 76-50 after a dominant first-half performance.
 
UC Davis (14-13, 10-7) earns its 10th win in conference play and clinches a highly-coveted top-six seed in the Big West Tournament. The Aggies were clicking on the offensive end, shooting 49% as a team and saw three players finish in double figures. Head Coach Jennifer Gross emphasized the importance of bringing energy on the defensive end of the floor from the tip, and UC Davis did exactly that, holding the Mustangs to just 15 points in the first half.
 
Continuing her excellent form was Tova Sabel, racking up a game-high 17 points despite not scoring in the in the second half. The junior went 5-of-9 on the day, with all her shot attempts coming from beyond the arc.
 
Tess Sussman poured in 14 points on her senior day, going 5-of-6 from the floor while grabbing six rebounds and picking up two steals. Megan Norris also finished in double-digits with 14 points on a very efficient 7-of-9 shooting.
 
 
How It Happened
UC Davis came out firing in the first quarter, racing to a 21-7 lead after shooting 50% in the opening 10 minutes. Norris paced the Aggies with eight points in the first period on a perfect 4-of-4 from the field. Megan Jones and Toval Sabel each scored five points and Makailia Sanders buried a three-pointer to help build the 14-point lead after one.
 
Sabel exploded for 12 points in the second quarter, knocking down four triples to put UC Davis out of sight. This allowed the Aggies to build their largest halftime lead of the season, taking a 43-15 advantage into the locker room.
 
Sussman found her rhythm with 11 points in the second half to lead the team. Cal Poly closed the gap by out-scoring UC Davis 20-12 in the final period, but it was too little, too late and the Aggies would cruise to the 70-56 win to send the fans happy in their final home game of the year.
